Funding a Chatham Hall Education

Financial Aid

Financing a Chatham Hall education is a major investment in your daughter’s future. The cost of educating a girl at Chatham Hall is substantial. Chatham Hall’s small size, personalized attention, opportunities for exploration and superior faculty, mean that the actual cost of educating each girl is far more than the actual tuition. Because of very supportive alumnae, parents and friends of the School, Chatham Hall is able to offset this deficit, thereby giving each student who attends Chatham Hall financial assistance.

Due to the generosity of our donors, additional funds are available for scholarships and for families who are unable to afford the cost of a Chatham Hall education.

Many families feel they are not eligible for financial aid however, for the 2009-2010 school year approximately 50% of our students received aid ranging from $2000 to full scholarships. Chatham Hall strives to make the Chatham Hall Experience affordable for all families however; our financial aid budget is limited.

Financial aid decisions are made completely separate from admission decisions.
Admission decisions are made prior to financial aid or scholarship consideration and is in no way effected by financial need.

As you are aware, we are asking that you mail your 2010 Federal IRS Form 1040 plus all Schedules and W-2 forms directly to SSS (Student and School Services) this year. You do not need to send a copy to Chatham Hall.

As an optional security precaution, we suggest that you black out the social security numbers on all forms and schedules.

You must include a copy of the cover sheet you received when you completed the PFS. We ask that you mail all documentation to SSS is a timely fashion so that the forms are received before February 10, 2011.

Special Issues

Situations involving separated or divorced parents can be difficult, and we are sensitive about reaching financial-aid decisions that are in the best interest of the student while taking Chatham Hall’s limited financial-aid resources into consideration. Each situation is considered separately and carefully. We will examine information from both natural parents and consider what financial resources are available for the student’s education from both natural parents and any stepparents.

Financial Aid Award Determination

The director of admission and financial aid will review your PFS, the SSS analysis, and your tax forms and make a recommendation to the Financial Aid Committee. All discussions at Financial Aid Committee meetings are confidential.

For more information about financial aid, please contact the Director of Admission and Financial Aid at 434-432-5613.

Nilsen Scholars
The largest single gift ever made to any girls’ independent school is the $31 million given to Chatham Hall from the estate of alumna Elizabeth Beckwith Nilsen, Class of 1931. It represents an amazing level of support inspired by Mrs. Nilsen’s lifelong appreciation for – and fond memories of – her student days at Chatham Hall. Her unmatched generosity allows us to offer that still-memorable experience to the best and the brightest for years to come through the Nilsen Scholarships.
If you are a girl who has what it takes to be a Nilsen Scholar, you are a girl with great expectations. You excel in academics. You have special talents. You are an achiever. It is important to find a school that is as dynamic as you are. Not simply a strong school, but an exceptional school such as Chatham Hall.
