Athos Menaboni Mural

Athos Menaboni of Atlanta, Ga. painted the mural in 1955. It is 21.5 ft. long and 8 ft. 2 in. tall. Rector William Yardley commissioned the oil on canvas mural as a tribute to Lillian Hensleigh, Chatham Hall’s main science teacher from 1926 until her death in 1951. The title is "St. Francis of the Piedmont." In it, St. Francis is blessing a collection of birds and animals native to the Chatham Hall campus. In fact, they were taken from Miss Hensleigh's inventory. The fields and mountain in the background are the view south from the Rectory. At the bottom of the mural are two banners with phrases that were supposed to fit both Miss Hensleigh and St. Francis. At the left is "Taught to love all living Things ..." and to the right is "Was loved by all Living Things ...". Miss Hensleigh had left a legacy that paid for the mural
